Obiettivi formativi

The course aims to provide the students with the essential knowledge of the theories and methods of ergonomics in general and cognitive ergonomics in particular, the awareness of the relationships between cognitive ergonomics and neighbouring scientific areas, and the tools to move independently and critically in this landscape.

Risultati dell'apprendimento attesi

After completing the course and a period of individual study the student is expected to possess:

(1) familiarity with the main theories on the notions of artefact and interaction and on the structural features of the human mind which enable the creation and use of artefacts in the interaction with the world.
(2) familiarity with the main theories and methods for studying the embedding of artefacts in human activities.
(3) ability to analyse and discuss specific examples and empirical applications.
(4) ability to think critically about each of these issues.

The course has a duration of 60 hours. The method of work will consist of lectures and of discussions as open and wide as possible. Whenever possible, we will try to have other researchers or experts of the issues discussed guest in individual lessons. Attendance is not mandatory.

Programma

Human life and activities are fully immersed in an artificial material, cognitive and social environment. The use of artefacts is interesting for many reasons: it raises the question of what cognitive and social structures underlie it, it raises questions about the material cultures of the human species, it requires and allows a comparison with what happens in other species. Getting closer to the present time, the evolution of ergonomics and cognitive ergonomics has accompanied and closely still accompanies that of manual and cognitive labour and of everyday life in general, and is now considering the diffusion of advanced technology in every domain of human life.

Therefore, in this course we will present and discuss the main theories and methodologies for the study of the notions of artefact and interaction, also framing them in appropriate scientific paradigms and illustrating their relationships with neighbouring scientific areas, as well as some applications of these concepts to specific types of real case. We will also explore some applications and implications of the issues outlined. We will discuss the use of theories as critical tools to observe and understand the relevant dynamics of the real world and as sources of inspiration to create one's own prospects and plans within it. The ultimate goal is to put the students in the position to think critically about the relevant concepts, to critically read and analyse relevant scientific texts, and to develop their own simple but independent research projects on the topics covered.
